I am sure you have had a million spam emails promising instant page 1 rankings on Google, they never seem to give up, and I am sure many people fall for these scam artists daily.

One interesting company I have encountered even calls you by telephone to persuade you to take their Instant Google plan for a fixed monthly fee, which sounds amazing. I had the displeasure of talking to one of their very pushy agents with a UK accent, who tried to strong arm me into taking their ‘plan’ (which sounded really dodgy), I decided to play along to find out how they operate….

Firstly they get the owner or manager on the phone and tell them their website is nowhere to be found on Google. When I was told this by the agent I was really puzzled as I get loads of traffic from Google and asked what exactly they searched for when attempting to find my site, but this information was ‘not on hand at this time’, but they are 100% sure my site is not reaching its full potential in Google and I should consider ‘Instant Google‘.

‘OK’ I said, ‘tell me EXACTLY what you are offering’…Now I obviously know a bit about SEO and Google Adsense, so I was appalled at all the inaccuracies and blatant lies in the sales pitch, but basically this is the offer…

they will place my site INSTANTLY onto page one of Google.com (ok, within 48 hours), I just need to supply them with 5 phrases that I would like my site to appear for. Now this sounds exactly like Google Adwords right….but ‘No its NOT Adwords’, and I was assured many times over that ‘this is NOT pay per click as the cost is set at R1300 + VAT’ (£25 in the UK), and it was rather ‘Sponsored Ads for a fixed monthly fee’ (subject to a R265 + VAT setup fee of course)

Wow, sponsored adverts on page one of Google for a fixed monthly fee!!! Imagine the possibilities….here I have clients spending tens of thousands monthly on Adwords, when they could be paying a fixed montly fee! (This was really starting to smell bad now!)

‘How can you charge a fixed monthly fee for PPC advertising’ I asked, ‘well’ the agent said (and you are gonna love this!) ‘Google subsidises the adverts for you, because of the world wide recession’!!, OMG, can you believe that! NO! LOL that is a blatant lie! but anyway there’s more…

Features of the Instant Google package are:

Guaranteed 1st Page Listing

Live within 48 hours

Month by month arrangement

5 area targeted phrases for your business

Tailor made adverts

Price Freeze Guarantee

No additional click charges!!

Email Technical Support

Keyphrase translation (additional charges apply)

Now this all sounds amazing for a fixed monthly fee right, I wish it were so easy and cost effective to advertise like this, it all sounds far too good to be true, because it absolutely is.

The BIG problem with this plan is that at no time are you told HOW MANY CLICKS you will receive for your set monthly fee. The fact is that depending on the bids of your competition, the Quality Score of your adverts, and your Click Through Rate for said adverts, and the amount of money the company actually allocates to your clicks, you may only get a few clicks for monthly fee before the budget allocated is depleted and your advert is removed. The company obviously needs to make a profit, so not all of your monthly fee is added to the campaign budget for your advert…how much is added is anyone’s guess.

So in reality your fixed monthly fee might only get you 5 clicks before the advert is removed, who knows, it all depends on the competition and the cost per click of the keywords you are targeting.

What is also dodgy, is that according to the agent, you don’t get access to your adwords account as ‘its their account and the adverts with it that is ’subsidised’ and they are the ones with the special ‘arrangement with Google‘, but I think its probably because they don’t want you to know how much of your monthly fee is actually going to your advertising budget…not much I would guess.

You have to also ask youself, how much of your budget is going to your own adverts, is there a possibility with such a setup and the pool of funds added to that account that your budget could be used for another companies adverts…yes it could, not saying that it is, but without transparency and access to your adwords account budget, clicks and stats, you are completely in the dark.

Interestingly, after NOT signing up with this particular company for obvious reasons, I actually landed a new client who was already using their services about a month later. My client happily showed me how their advert was displaying on Google, and as a test, they clicked their own advert, after which time (to the disgust of my client) it no longer displayed on Google for their chosen phrases. LOL, luckily for me the budget allocated to the clicks for that client had been exhausted right in front of us, and I was happy to jump in, and setup a REAL Adwords account for the client. My new client then cancelled their monthly agreement with the company offering the Instant Google service, in favour of their own account, that they have full control over, managed by us on their behalf.

Now my client has full access to all their stats, can create as many adverts and choose as many key phrases as they want for their campaign, there are no limits! The client is also able to get far more mileage out of their monthly budget because they know ALL of what they put into the campaign is used exclusively for their adverts.

So strictly speaking, companies offering the Instant Google service might not be breaking any rules, but in my opinion, what they are doing is misleading people who have no idea what Adwords is and how it works.

The client I got honestly believed their site was simply bumped to the top of ORGANIC search results, and had no idea what Adwords was all about. The client thought that their site would feature at the top of page one 24hours a day, 7 days a week, as long as they paid their fixed monthly fee, regardless of clicks, this is simply NOT true.

According to Google (View here):

Beware of SEOs that claim to guarantee rankings, allege a “special relationship” with Google, or advertise a “priority submit” to Google. There is no priority submit for Google.

For another account of the same type of practice, check out SEO Scotland who had a similar bad experience.

If you want your website to rank well on Google, get a professional company to show you ALL the options available to you, and do some research before signing anything. I can recommend Gotaclick because I am associated with them, check out SEO Cape Town

You can get an invite directly from Google (https://services.google.com/fb/forms/wavesignup/) or you can be invited by an existing member, which is why there are so many people simply asking and begging existing members for a spare invitation. Twitter is riddled with people blatantly asking for invitations, and I have heard of people actually selling them to others! If you want to see the chatter, follow the hashtag #googlewaveinvite on twitter.

I am lucky enough to still have some invites available, and have allocated 15 out of my stash to give away to desperate people in need on an invite.

I will be randomly choosing 15 names from the people who tweet or comment on this post, and inviting them to Google Wave. I will choose 5 random names from people who tweet, 5 from people who comment using a disqus profile, and 5 from people who comment using a non-disqus profile.

If for some reason very few people comment or tweet this post, then everyone will get an invite.

Today (Starting at 12:01 a.m. EDT on Saturday, June 13) Facebook usernames became active. What this means, is that if you want to give out the address to your profile page to someone, you can now give them an easy to remember name, rather than the old profile ID.

You only get to choose your username once, and it cant be changed or transferred, so you MUST choose wisely.

<script type="text/javascript"

On the Facebook blog:

Username selection is now live at http://www.facebook.com/username/. Remember, choosing a username is optional and will give you a distinct Web address for your profile. It will not change the name that appears on your profile, in search or elsewhere on the site.

Facebook go on to say:

Your new Facebook URL is like your personal destination, or home, on the Web. People can enter a Facebook username as a search term on Facebook or a popular search engine like Google

This is pretty interesting, as FB is a really powerful domain name, it could be great to have a keyword or phrase as your username for one of your Facebook pages, or even your own username. Surely it will display a URL from Facebook in the search results for that term somewhere, and any little bit helps right. Even if the username pages are not any help for google searches, time will tell if it will help with internal searches on Facebook, and hey, if you give out your profile to clients, wouldnt it be cool if they could see your product/services etc in the name, more professional I think.

Usernames allow public entities to easily promote your presence on Facebook with a short URL (http://www.facebook.com/companyname). This username can be used in your marketing communications, company website and business cards.

I was able to get: facebook.com/searchengine.optimization.expert for myself, so I can now give that out for my personal profile. I also have loads of Facebook pages, and tried securing names for them, but was not able to for all. At the moment, FB knows there are going to be loads of people trying to secure names for their pages, so they have set limits.

The limits are temporary, and are to allow pages with more than 1000 fans, that were created before 31 May 2009, to get first dibs.

Check out the rules here: http://www.facebook.com/help.php?page=900

If you are new to Facebook, you will only be able to choose a username for yourself on or after June the 9th, 2009.

So….get cracking! Go out and secure your names, using the keywords that you want to be found with….let me know what you choose.

I have recently come to the conclusion that Google really really likes well designed websites. We have a client at work who’s webiste we market online. Over the last couple of weeks we made a variety of changes to the website code. Our aim was to analyse the site, identify elements in the code that could be holding the site back in the search engine results, and rectify the problems.

We began by cleaning up the coding on the website. A couple of years of subtle changes, tweaks, script changes etc had taken its toll, and due to laziness or bad workmanship, the code was splattered with snippets of left over code.

We cleaned up the code, removed all unnecessary coding, made sure the site validated as valid xhtml and css on W3C and streamlined the site. We wanted to also reduce the number of http requests to the server, so we combined images and used hotspots on the images to link to pages. The load time difference after changing the images was not noticable, and the file sizes were similar, but the http requests was cut in half.

We created a favicon image for the site, our reasoning was that we didnt want any errors when loading the site, and Google has the option of showing search results witht the icons of the sites displayed.

We combined all the javascripts in the site into one external javascript file, and moved the script to the base of the html.

We optimized all the remaining images on the website, making them faster to load, and streamlined the text, optimizing it for the target key phrase.

The good news is that in a two week period, the site jumped from page 3 position 6 on Google, to Page 1 position 10. Obviously the ranking is changing all the time, as Google re-crawls each page in the top pages and re-shuffles the sites, but hopefully the site will carry on up the charts.

The main changes to the site allowed it to load in half the original time, with fewer requests, and more valid and streamlined code. Score!

With some options, you’ll enjoy more ad impressions, clicks, and conversions; with others, you’ll get fewer impressions and more narrow targeting. By applying the appropriate matching options to your keywords, you can best meet your ROI goals.

Your options are:

Broad Match – This is the default option. If your ad group contained the keyword tennis shoes, your ad would be eligible to appear when a user’s search query contained tennis and shoes, in any order, and possibly along with other terms. Your ads could also show for singular/plural forms, synonyms, and other relevant variations. For example, you ad might show on tennis shoe or tennis sneakers. Run a Search Query Performance Report to see what keyword variations trigger your ad. Check out this blog post to learn how broad match can help you reach more customers (English only).

Phrase Match – If you enter your keyword in quotation marks, as in “tennis shoes,” your ad would be eligible to appear when a user searches on the phrase tennis shoes, in this order, and possibly with other terms before or after the phrase. For example, your ad could appear for the query red tennis shoes but not for shoes for tennis, tennis shoe, or tennis sneakers. Phrase match is more targeted than broad match, but more flexible than exact match.

Exact Match – If you surround your keywords in brackets — such as [tennis shoes] — your ad would be eligible to appear when a user searches for the specific phrase tennis shoes, in this order, and without any other terms in the query. For example, your ad wouldn’t show for the query red tennis shoes or tennis shoe. You likely won’t receive as many impressions, clicks, or conversions with exact match as you would with broad match. However, if you’ve carefully constructed a comprehensive keyword list, the traffic you do receive may be more targeted to your product or service.

Negative Keyword – If your keyword is tennis shoes and you add the negative keyword -red, your ad will not appear when a user searches on red tennis shoes. Negative keywords are especially useful if your account contains lots of broad-matched keywords. It’s a good idea to add any irrelevant keyword variations you see in a Search Query Performance Report or the Keyword Tool as a negative keyword. Learn more.

Remember, no matter which matching options you use, it’s important to only use keywords that accurately describe your product or service.

What I like about this whole system is that if you use these options together, you can creat an embedded match, which is able to help you run an incredibly effective campaign.

Setting up an Embedded Match

To start a basic embedded match campaign, setup three different adverts for the same website, these adverts are going to be shown at the same time, but to different users, depending what they search for. As such, each advert should be targeted for that specific user/visitor profile.

Advert 1 = Exact match advert

Make sure all the key phrases in this advert are in [square brackets]

Advert 2 = Phrase Match

Make sure all the phrases in this advert are in “quotation marks”. Once you have these setup, also add negative -[exact match] key phrases, use the same ones as in your first advert. What you are doing here, is targeting the phrase, but NOT showing the advert at all for the exact matches on advert one. So advert 1 and advert 2 will always be shown seperately.

eg: “key phrase 1″, “key phrase 2″, -[key phrase]

Advert 3 = Broad Match

In this advert, simply type the target key phrases without the square brackets or quotation marks. Once you have all your key words, also add negative “key phrases”, so that your advert is not shown when a user searches using your exact phrase. eg: key phrase 1, key phrase 2, -”key phrase”

By doing all of this, you have segmented your target audience, and can create adverts specifically for each demographic. If you think of a dart board or target, your bulls eye is the traffic from advert 1, the second ring is the traffic from advert 2, and the third ring, is the traffic from advert 3.

That is how you setup an Embedded Match. Hope you find this useful, it works like a charm for me

Cheers for now

Google describes PageRank as:

PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page’s value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves “important” weigh more heavily and help to make other pages “important”.

For more information on PageRank, check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PageRank

Apparently the actual update was on the 30th of December, so many people will start to see changes on the search engines over the new year and the beginning of 2009. If anyone is interested, SEO Company has a page showing updates, I dont know how accurate it is, or how up to date, but it has some interesting info anyway.

Sadly, not everyone is going to benefit from the changes, there are many sites that will drop in PageRank, but I suppose not everyone can be a winner, there has to be a loser too

The sites I noticed the biggest change on, were the ones that I have been working hard on with on-page SEO, as well as making them faster loading, valid xhtml and css, cross browser compliant.

Lets hope that 2009 is a good year for all our websites, good luck to all!

Some websites really have a tough time getting ranked well on Google / Yahoo / MSN, most of the time its because they are not specific in choosing what keywords they want to be number one for, and then optimizing their site and pages accordingly. Well thats the way I see it anyway.

From my experience, I feel each page on a site can and should be optimized for a specific and different target key-phrase, in order to cover a wide range of related key words and phrases. A big mistake that people tend to make is that they concentrate on only optimizing their home page, and also try to cover ever conceivable keyword combination. Unfortunately the website usually then has a problem ranking well for any of the keywords, and doesn’t get much search engine traffic.

If you do a search on Google for a single word and you will see the amount of pages that are listed in the results run into the millions sometimes, because it is usually too broad a search term. Most people tend to use two or three word searches at least, so that they get good, specific results that are useful to them. You should think about this when optimizing your website, what phrase would you like your site to be listed number one for? Get into the head of your customers, what would they search for?

The best thing to do is to decide on the main and ultimate key-phrase that you want to target, then find all the sub-key-phrases that are related to that key-phrase. Now, build your pages with the home page targeting your main key-phrase, and the sub pages targeting the sub-key-phrases, making the content for each page as relevant as possible. Each page should be individually optimized to target a specific key phrase.

The content and information of your pages needs to be good to rank well on Google, especially so if you are targeting highly competitive key-phrases. If you want to out rank your competitors, your pages need to be more relevant than theirs for the same key phrase. Search for your target key phrase on Google, look at the sites of the first 10 results. How do they differ content wise from your site? Is there information on them that should also be on yours?

I am a firm believer that the biggest thing to be concerned about when getting ranked well on Google, Yahoo, or MSN, is RELEVANCE. How relevant is the key-phrase you are targeting to the content on your page? All the big search engines want to deliver the best possible results for each search term, so surely he more relevant your content is, the higher your site will rank, and if your site is the most relevant, you will be number one. I believe it is just that simple.

Things like link popularity and page rank, etc, do help a lot, but can never really beat relevance completely. Take a very extreme example, try and do a search for something stupid like ‘flying pigs’, and look at the results. What you will see is that your site is NOT number one, why, because it is probably not relevant to the search term. Now ask yourself, why are the home pages of Google, Yahoo, Facebook, Myspace or the Stumbleupon for example not number one in the same results page? If you think about it, those sites have thousands of inbound links, AND have high page ranks, yet they did not display in position one of the results?! How can this be? You know exactly why, you have always known, its because they are not relevant to the search term, and all the major search engines surely must focus on bringing the best and most relevant pages into the results for your search term, period.

As a website owner, you need to target a specific key phrase for each of your pages, and make that page the most relevant page for that key phrase. Now it has to be said that relevance to a search term is in itself relative, I mean if your site consists of a single paragraph containing your target key phrase, then it might be extremely relevant to the content. This approach though doesn’t sit too well with the big search engines, who are not ’stupid’, and will prefer a site with more relevant information to rank higher, so don’t even try and trick or fool them into giving you a better ranking. Your site needs to have a bit of substance to go with the relevance in order to perform well in the long run. If you are going to do something, why not try and be the best at it? Try to have the best and most relative information, and you will find getting to page one of Google, Yahoo and MSN a breeze.

If you had to take a look at the top website listings in Google, Yahoo and MSN, on average its the ‘fittest’ that appear at the top. When someone refers to fitness you normally think of gym, regular exercise, health food, well toned bodies, etc. Having a well toned body and being fit normally involves time, energy and a lot of hard work, and the same is with a good ranking website. The problem with a large percentage of people who want a better body, as well as with website owners, is that everyone wants a quick fix. Everyone wants the end result yesterday already, with the least amount of work, at little or no expense, and they want it to last forever! Well thats not likely to happen anytime soon!

When I say the ‘fittest’ sites appear at the top of the search engine rankings, I mean the ones that are normally working the hardest at it. How do you excercise your website you might ask, well, here are some things you could do to increase its fitness:

Edit / add content on your website regularly – search engines as well as real people will visit more regularly if the content is fresh.

Refine your coding, make it clean, fast loading, and web standards compliant – nobody likes a slow clunky website

Keep your site design and coding up-to-date with the website trends and ideas – again, keep it fresh

Target specific key words and phrases with each new page, and tweak it on pages that are not ranking too well

Run a newsletter that can be sent out to a subscriber base, publish it on your website as a new page too, combine it with an RSS feed if you can.

Market the website on social networks, forums, blogs, newsgroups etc – flat out tell people about the site

Run competitions, polls etc on your site, get the visitors involved and interacting with the site

Build the brand, associate your website with speed, service, prices, value, whatever you can, so visitors return to your site and tell their friends about it.

It is way easier to get and keep an ‘active’ website in a good ranking position on search engines because like people, fitter is better. Just as in the human body, if you neglect your website, it will suffer, slow down, and generally fade into a sad soggy, floppy mess that nobody finds attractive! The top sites normally have been designed in a way that is appealing to the visitor as well as search engines. These days your design needs to be done twice, once on the visual side of the site, the part that the visitor sees, and again in the coding of the site. Both of these need to be maintained, toned, and updated, so that they dont become boring, obsolete, and uninteresting.

Just like there are those horrible people who never have to excercise, and still look great, there are horrible websites that seem to do well on search engines even though they just dont deserve to be there. It all comes down to conversion of visitor to customer, sometimes a site may rank well, but not convert anywhere near as many visitors to customers as a competitor website that ranks further down on search engine results. This is why your site must focus on the visitor and their experience on your website, just as much as the search engines, and their perception of your website.

The bottom line is that you will find it much easier to rank high in search engines if your site is well toned and excersised regularly. Like with most excercise, quick fixes are short lived and not worth it in the long run. Often you will end up in a worse position than when you started, and in the case of your website, may have to outlay large amounts to get your website and its reputation ‘fixed’.

It makes far more sense to set a goal and steadily work toward it, continuously making improvements with the end result in mind. In the long run, your site will rank better, and you will find it easier and easier to outrank competitor websites.

Those of you who suddenly feel the urge to tone your bodies and get fitter, visit hot body training for some tips

What actually happens with google alerts, is that you input a key phrase that you are interested in, every time google finds new web pages relating to that phrase, you get an email, with the address of the websites. Simply put, Its an email alert that google has found another page related to your key phrase that you chose in the google alerts control panel.

Using Google Alerts to keep track of your competition websites, and build links to your own website

Do a google search for your primary key phrase that you are trying to rank for, and make a note of the top ten websites in the results. Now go to Google Alerts (http://www.google.com/alerts), and put each of those web addresses in as items you would like to be alerted on. Now every time one of these websites is added to another directory, links page, search engine, blog etc and google finds it, you will get an email.

This information is like gold, and you should immediately visit the offending website, and see if you can get your own site listed there too. It might have been a link exchange, or a paid placement etc, but sometimes its a blog talking about the competition website. Blogs are great because 90% of the time, there is an option to comment on the article, and this is when you strike!

Leave an excellent comment on the page, I mean make it worth its weight in gold, be constructive, informative, witty, etc, pull out all the stops, and of course, leave your website link. Even be so bold as to say how much you like the competition website, and why you like it. All this will make people interested in you, and your website link. It will also ensure that your comment is not removed, because the admin of the blog will love great comments to the articles. This works especially if the blog actually belongs to your competitor! So in theory its entirely possible for you to get your main competitors website to actually have links to yours!

Whats also great, is that normally if you visit the websites as soon as you receive your google alert, if its a blog article, there normally arent any other comments yet, so you get to be the first one to comment on the article, and so your website link is going to have the most visibility out of all the comments. Yeah baby!

Now comes an even cooler part, share the blog page! Thats right, most blogs have those buttons to share the posting on digg/delicious/newsvine etc. Click the button and post the page to as many places as you are a member. This will allow others to find the posting, and in turn, your link and comment. If its a competitors blog and you are reluctant to share it, get over yourself! The blog still has a link to your site, and the world should know about it!

Use Google Alerts to get web content

Go to Google Alerts and input your main phrase that you are trying to rank high for. Now everytime google finds new sites related to that phrase you get your notification. Normally it lists a lot of news pages and blogs talking about your key phrase. So immediately you benefit by keeping on top of the latest breaking news about your target phrase. Visit all these news sites, and harvest the information to use on your own site, to increase your status as an authority website for that phrase. Free content, cool!

Your site will quickly become the authority on that phrase if every time there is breaking news on that subject, your site has a page about it. So harvest all the news information, re-write it, and make it your own. Then publish the page on your website, and of course share it with social bookmarking sites. This works well if your website has products for sale, and one of your phrases is a brand name or product name. Your site can have the most up to date information about that product or brand at all times if you keep track of things with google alerts! Remember, the most relevant sites for a key phrase are at the top of page one on google!

Of course like above, visit all the blogs, and post comments about each article, again, you will probably be the first to comment and leave your link. Remember to make the comment really good. Dont do a one-liner, make it a work of art, a really good post that you can be proud of. Lastly, dont forget to share the page!

Use Google Alerts to track when Google indexes your pages

Another nifty way to use Google Alerts, is to put a random line of text onto each of your pages when you publish them, eg: asdlkhsofieknhewioughsoeighjsoefjoief.

Go then to the Google Alerts control panel, and put that line of text in as an item you would like to get email alerts on. Do this every time you create a new web page. Now you can use Google Alerts to track when your pages get indexed by Google. As soon as google finds your page, you get an email, now you pretty much know for certain, that your page is indexed in Google, and should be able to be found in the search results.

If you cant seem to find your page when doing searches for the key phrase you are targeting with that page, you can make changes to the code or content, use a new random string of text, then upload the changes.

Go back to Google Alerts, and replace the old text string with the new one, and wait for your email alert!

Most of our clients are SMME, we deal directly with the owners of the company, and get to know them on a personal level. Unfortunately, every time I talk to clients about website maketing, they all ask about getting listed on so called ‘thousands’ of search engines. It seems that almost all of them have at some point in time received some spam email promising their site on thousands of search engines within 24 hours or a similar type offer. Worse still are the ones who have been ‘educated’ by friends and / or family, who think they know what they are talking about. Most of these guys have all been brainwashed by people and companies wanting to make a quick buck.

The reality is that people do use search engines to find things on the web, that much is true. What they DON’T do, is use all these thousands of search engines as much as people would have you believe. The fact is that almost all good search engine traffic woldwide comes from Google, Yahoo, and MSN, the most popular search engines on the web. These engines being the most popular engines, leads you to believe that the others are NOT all that popular, and therefore dont get as much traffic, let alone traffic that uses their services. Of the web traffic these engines do get, you have to ask yourself, what is the percentage of their visitors that will be trying to find YOUR website or services / products? Why would a visitor to these other engines websites use them to search and NOT use Google, Yahoo, or MSN?

Dont get me wrong, there are some other engines that do have satisfied and loyal customers, and most of the time they keep their place in the market by being language, region, theme or subject specific, in order to hold onto their loyal users, but not many.

Some of these engines supliment some or all of their search results, by re-branding the results from the big 3 under their own name. Many times you will find that you can get identical results when searching for something in Google, and other search engine X. One such website that gets results from multiple locations, and has a great following of loyal users, is the site www.Dogpile.com, which lists the top results of each of the engines in its results.

So definately the big 3, Google, Yahoo and MSN are the most important engines to be listed. The next place your website MUST be listed in, is the DMOZ directory. Thousands of other websites get directory results from DMOZ, the most important web directory on the web. Get your website listed in those four locations, and the chances are that your site will be ‘findable’ in most of these thousands of other search engines already anyway.

If you get listed in all these thousands of small independant engines, your link is not listed for any given length of time on a specific page, and is only able to be found via a search. So the only traffic you will receive from that engine, is as with any engine, from visitors using the search facililty. So you once again need to ask yourself, what sort of visitor traffic is the engine getting? Of that traffic, how many people will be looking for my site/products/services? I am not saying it wont hurt to submit your site there, but would you get a good return on investment (ROI) from paying some company to list your site in all of these ‘thousands of engines’, when the big 3 are clearly dominating in traffic and searches? Correct me if I am wrong, but as far as I am concerned, the short answer, is a huge NO!

So what happens if you dont care, and are willing to spend the money with one of these companies to get listed on ‘thousands of engines’?

Are you sitting pretty, making so much money through your website that you dont know what to do with all of it? Well, not necissarily! You might have just paid to be listed on tons of these ‘engines’, but that doesnt mean you are going to get any more traffic than you are already getting. Just because your site is indexed, does NOT mean you will be listed on the first page of results on that engine. There are NO guarantees to where your site will be placed in the regular search results on any given search engine, by any web marketing company on the web.

The fact is that your website still needs to be optimized for search phrases that you would like to be ranked high for, before you see the results of being indexed in any search engine, and that goes for the big 3 too. With each real search engine having its own unique formula that it uses to judge where your site should be listed in search results for a key word or phrase, its going to be hard to optimize a website to be number one for all of the big 3 engines at the same time.

So you have ask yourself again, why pay to have your site submitted to thousands of search engines, with no guarantee of placement, and no guarantee of traffic? I don’t get it, maybe I am missing something?

till next time – F
